Claudia at 100: Power, Beauty, Resilience and Legacy Saturday 22 August, 12.30pm – 4.30pm
As part of this year’s Carnival Season we take a look at the founder of the West Indian Gazette, social justice activist, political campaigner and feminist Claudia Jones. This study day is a chance to look back at the prolific life and legacy of Claudia Jones and why she is often referred to as the ‘Mother of Carnival’.

Through film, archive material, personal accounts, and a live blues and jazz soundtrack in the cafe, commemorate this great woman who today is still hidden within British history.
Join the conversation with contributors Donald Hinds Author & Educator; Marika Sherwood, Historian, Author and Co-Founder of the Black and Asian Studies Association (BASA); Ruth Tompsett, Former Principal Lecturer in Carnival Studies at Middlesex University, and Helen McDonald, Singer (Yaaba Funk).
The Claudia at 100: Power, Beauty, Resilience and Legacy Study Day will take place in the Learning Centre at Black Cultural Archives for ticket holders only, and music in the Courtyard and Cafe is open to all.
