Together with the University of the Virgin Islands (US) The Caribbean Training and Research Group (CARI-TaRG) are hosting a 2 day Conference on the theme of “Mediation & The Caribbean Justice System” on 9th and 10th November at the University Campus in St Thomas.
The imperative for the development of the use of mediation/alternative dispute resolution in the Caribbean has been signalled by a number of senior Caribbean law makers who have suggested publicly that alternative dispute resolution was a necessity for the survival of the Region’s judicial system in light of the massive case backlog crippling the court system. Burgeoning case backlogs have forced many Caribbean countries to take a harder look at the promotion of alternative dispute resolution techniques as opposed to litigation to solving disputes.

Experts from the Caribbean, UK and the US will present best practices and case studies from their own Countries. There will also be a series of “live mediations” that will enable delegates to observe mediation in action.
The outcome of the Conference will be the development of a long-term strategic plan for discussion with appropriate stakeholders for the increased use of ADR in judicial systems throughout the Caribbean.
