Anthurium’s Beauty

We see anthuriums practically everywhere in the Caribbean. Did you know that due to their open, heart-shape and long-lasting characteristics they are popular as hostess or hospitality gifts?

Here are some other interesting facts about the anthurium plant:

The anthurium has more than 1000 species and can be as diverse as they are beautiful.

They can re-bloom all year.

With their low maintenance care schedule and blooms that last for months, anthuriums are a great choice for novice plant owners.

The colourful heart-shape is not a flower.

Though it looks like a waxy bloom, it is actually a spathe, or shield-like leaf. Its function is to protect the spadix, which contains several tiny flowers when in bloom. The spathe can come in many colors, such as pink, orange and white.

The name anthurium is Greek, meaning “Tail Flower”

The anthurium is also known as the Flamingo Flower, Hawaiian Heart, Painted Tongue and Painters Palette because of the unique shape and spadix.
