Caribbean news. Barbados celebrated the first ever Cadet exchange program for both the island and the Caribbean in a formal ceremony at the Barbados High Commission last week. Officiating, Acting High Commissioner Donville Johnson opened the evenings proceedings with an introduction of his senior aids including Euclid Goodman, Minister Counselor second in command.
The cadet Exchange program organised by Sub-Lieutenant Candyce Kelshall Commanding Officer, Hove and Adur Sea Cadet Unit, Brighton will be the guests of the Barbados Defence Force at HMBS PELICAN from Wednesday 23 April to Friday 2 May 2014 and will be exposed to the workings of the BDF as part of their military orientation and acclimatisation to unfamiliar surroundings.
Accompanying CO Kelshall for the ceremony were CPO C Hartley, 1st Lt Hove and Adur, A/Sgt L Warrant, RMCD Detachment Commander, Lt Cdr(SCC) A Reeves RNR, District Officer, Lt Cdr (SCC) M Copelin RNR, Lt (SCC) N Rogers RNR, Lt (SCC) C Rogers RNR. also Cdr Ian Wright Unit chairman, Mrs Clements a parent and A Sgt Roder RMCD.
Petra Roach Vice president Barbados Tourism Authority spoke briefly on Barbados while Cedric Lynch also of BTA was on hand to present tokens of appreciation to the Cadets and officers. It is anticipated that a Barbados contingent will visit the UK as part of their exchange program to Europe in 2015.
The aim of the visit is to establish a relationship between the Hove and Adur Sea Cadet Unit and the Barbados Cadets Corps Sea Cadet Unit. This visit will provide an opportunity for the UK cadets to experience training in Barbados. It will also promote camaraderie between the cadets of the two units, and provide an opportunity for the UK instructors to deliver First Aid training to the Barbadian cadets. Ultimately the visit will help to make people in Brighton and Hove know more about Barbados, and foster relationships between the young people of the two communities.
