Exco Levi – Storms of Life
If you’ve been following the top DJ War’s top 5 Reggae songs you’ll have come across Exco Levi’s songs on the countdown before. The upcoming artist is having a very good year, consistently dropping quality music and ‘Storms of Life’ produced by Silly Walks is no different! The track is a real positive/conscious record and will be released on the Silly Walks album Silly Walks Discotheque released later on this month. The artist croons: “Even when the storms of life are raging, I will survive” nuh true? Check out the official video shot in Hamburg.
Denyque – To be in Love
Another great upcoming artist – Denyque is gaining quite a reputation for her great voice, song writing and consistency on records. The artist who was enthralled in some controversy when a rogue blog posted nude pictures of her online is still letting her music do the talking and it’s saying a lot! ‘To be in Love’ recorded on Romeich Records Ghetto Lifestyle Riddim is a sultry joint that explores the artist’s feelings towards an unnamed significant other. “Is this how it feels to be in love? ‘Cause I can’t go a day without your touch,” lucky guy! Etana – Wifey
Though an article this week posed the question “Matey era in; Wifey out?” proposing that the role of the side piece is more desirable in todays society, Jamaican songstress Etana is still holding her corner on ‘Wifey.’ From the first note Etana’s voice is exceptional and coupled with the impeccable production on the Heart & Soul Riddim, (one of my favorite riddims of recent months) the song is a hit. “Second hand clothes and second hand man a wha dis man mi nuh inna dat man!” Tell them Etana! Lol
Voicemail – Sunshine
Sunshine… One thing Jamaica’s got a lot of right! And with ‘summer’ coming you’d be excused for thinking the Voicemail cut was an ode to beautiful Jamaican sunny days, but it’s not. The ‘sunshine’ Voicemail’s crooning about on this intimate track is brought about by having that special someone in your life. The production on the tune is pretty minimalistic and creates a mellow tone, this one is most probably one you’ll listen to in your headphones rather than at a club! Check out ‘Sunshine.’
Lutan Fyah – Jah Jah Make the World Go Round
Veteran artist Lutan Fyah is the final entry on our list and his cut on the Hope riddim is definitely the most spiritual on our countdown. As the title suggests the song is a reflection on various aspects of life and its relation to Jah. I first heard this song compiling this list and couldn’t help bobbing my head, flashing my imaginary locks, there’s very positive vibe to ‘Jah Jah Make the World Go Round’. Don’t let the lyrics go over your head though! It will probably take a couple listens to digest properly, but there are a lot of thinking points. Check it out here!
