Driver’s Title Still Open As Final Round Of Karting Begins

| November 22, 2011

The final round of the Barbados Karting Association’s 2011 Frutee Championship season is slated for today at the Bushy Park Racing Circuit with the overall championship not yet decided.

The final round of the season is sponsored by SDRR and there is a planned social after the race meet.

However, it is business first as it appears to be a straight fight to the wire between Zane Maloney who leads with 809 points and defending champion driver, Christian Hinds who has 749 points. A change to the rules this year has allowed for all drivers across all classes an opportunity to challenge for the driver’s title. In previous years it was only the Premier 310 Yamaha Class that was eligible for this title.

Though Hinds may have a mathematical chance at retaining the title as he is allowed to drop his lowest score from the 10 rounds, Zane Maloney has been on fire in the second half of the season and does not look like he is easing up. He too has the same opportunity like all the other drivers of dropping his lowest score, so Hinds will be hoping that while he has a good day, Zane’s collection of points can be stalled somewhat.

These two drivers lead their respective classes with Zane leading the 60cc Easy Kart by over 100 points in the second season and overall he has 809 points. Second in the class and Season one winner is Megan Gilkes who missed the last round with a broken arm. She has 714 points overall in the group and is third in the overall standings.

The other two drivers in this class are Aiden Fortier and Noah White who are third and fourth respectively in the class.

In Hinds’ class, he won the first season and is on target to win the second season in the class. He has amassed 749 points overall and will be hoping to collect full points today and that Zane does not do the same.

In his class Hinds, is hunted by Tremaine Forde-Catwell with 677 points. Forde-Catwell has been his closest rival in both seasons and is fourth overall. He may just be the one to spoil the party for Hinds.

Third in the class is Owen Yarde, who is a mere six points off Forde-Catwell in the second season standings but almost 100 points in the overall.

Raphael Russell has been battling mechanical gremlins for some time but was able to race last time. He is fourth while Luke St. John who only competed once this season brings up the rear.

After losing out on the top spot by one point in the first season Joshua Maloney is the current leader of season two in the 270 Yamaha Class with 350 points. He has 663 points overall and is fifth on the overall hunt for the title.

Saviola Thomas is second in the second season after winning the first season. However he missed the opening round of the second season and may be able to close some ground today and there is also the dropping of the lowest score.

Javani Smith is third in the class, while Joshua Parris and Kristopher. Mapp round off the drivers in this
class.
