Ghana’s High Commissioner honoured by Guba Awards

His Excellency Professor Kwaku Danso Boafo, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK was honoured at the 3rd Annual Launch of the Ghana UK Based Achievement (GUBA) Awards 2012 held at the High Commission in London on Thursday Sept. 20th 2012.

His Excellency was presented the award for his outstanding service to the Ghanaian community in the UK as well as for his years of service and support to the GUBA awards.

Professor Kwaku Danso Boafo has been at the forefront of Ghanaian politics for a number of years.  He served as Ambassador to Cuba in 1997 and subsequently was appointed Minister of Health in 2000.

It was during this time that he participated in several Health summits and was chosen to preside over the WHO discussion on health systems.   Additionally, Professor Danso Boafo is known for his accreditations from an array of Ivy League Universities and his case studies which most specifically include HIV/AIDS and Malaria in Africa.

He also served as a political analyst on several radio stations in Cuba, Jamaica and Atlanta until he was appointed High Commissioner in 2009.  He currently serves as Chairman of the Executive Committee and Interim Management Committee of the Commonwealth Foundation.

The award was presented to His Excellency by Mr. Charles Thompson MBE who expressed humility for being called upon to make the presentation.  He says ‘it is indeed a pleasure and honour to present you with this tribute which we hold in high esteem which gives us a chance to remember you in terms of your achievements and contributions to GUBA over the past few years.’

A humbled Prof. Kwaku Danso-Boafo accepted his award after which a short video clip was shown highlighting his journey as a Ghanaian Ambassador with a special tribute by Honourable Lord Paul Boateng. The Commissioner was gracious in accepting his award and appreciative for being given such an honour.

His remarks were; ‘Thank you to GUBA for this award. This is my very first official award; it feels like an OSCAR, but in this case a GUBA! Thank you so much for recognising my contribution to the community as this is what we are here to do’, he said, ‘ I will accept this award on behalf of the staff at the High commission and the people of Ghana and let’s continue this collaboration for many years to come.’

GUBA Patron Hugh Quarshie and GUBA Ambassador Jeanette Kwakye were at the Launch to witness the presentation, along with a host of media personnel and sponsors.

The GUBA Awards is endorsed by the Ghana High Commission since its inception in 2010.  The awards showcase the best in Ghanaian talent across business, sports, entertainment, and professional sectors.   The launch was the platform for announcing this year’s nominees that goes out for public vote
