Is Abortion Right: For Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate or Club Foot Reasons

Following my recent article ‘What Do You Stand For’? I challenged myself and one of the things I need to take a stand on is justice for the unborn child. I hate injustice, did you know that an unborn child is classified as a fetus in UK law until it is born and lives a separate existence from its mother? See court case of Paton v British Pregnancy Advisory Service ². I despise the term fetus as it’s disrespectful to the life given to us by God.

I’m pro-choice, which means I respect everyone’s choice and opinion even in disagreements. I’m also pro-life, I believe that life starts from conception and is precious. The issue of whether life should be preserved or aborted and when it actually started remains controversial. I’m not dealing with this or abortions being done for the preservation of life, nor the various ill circumstances of conception.

I signed a petition by www.righttolife.org  supporting a Bill changing the law preventing cleft palate, cleft lip, and clubfoot being grounds for abortion’. Fiona Bruce MP is leading this campaign, currently babies with disabilities can be legally aborted up until birth. A cleft lip, club foot and cleft palate can be corrected by a surgical procedure, therefore in my humble opinion it is not right that a child is killed for having one of these conditions.

One question I have is, if a child has ten perfect toes and fingers, with a perfect mouth and the ability to walk correctly, then does this alone qualify it with the right to live? Eurocat’s review for 2013 showed 157 babies were aborted in England and Wales who had cleft lip or palate and 205 babies were aborted between 2006 to 2010.³ A new report is due which according to Eurocat the figures are now much higher. We’re dealing with a condition in children which can be easily treated, and therefore they should not be aborted.

Globally, there are charities such as ‘Smile Train’ an international charity working in partnership with hospitals all over the world treating cleft lip and palates in babies and children4. The global organisation CBM work in countries to help alleviate the issues with clubfoot 5, thus making global abortions on these grounds unnecessary.

In conclusion according to World Health Organisation, “every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions. This corresponds to approximately 125,000 abortions per day”.6  Why is this happening, what are the reasons and why is it seemingly going unnoticed in the media? I’ll investigate this and come back to you at a later date.

Questions to ask yourself.:

  1. Would you be prepared to support an organisation who helps alleviate cleft palate, lip and clubfoot for the unborn?
  2. Do you agree that abortion should be only done where there’s a risk to life, possibly leading to death?
  3. What are you passionate about and are you willing to take a stand to change it?

Until next time, remember you are beautiful and wonderfully made – With love Amanda x
