Spiritual commentary. Happy Valentine’s Day, Beloved.  Today is the day we honour St. Valentine from the Latin word Valentine which means worthy and powerful a Christian man who was beated, stoned, and executed by decapitation around 270 A.D. for not converting to worship other Gods and for performing secret marriage ceremonies in church.

Roman Emperor Claudius II banned marriage because he wanted to increase the size of his military with soldiers who were focused on their military career and not their wives and children.

St. Valentine wrote a letter to a young woman Julia and signed it “Your valentine”  1 Corinthians 13:4-8 “Love is patient, love is kind.

It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.”

St. Valentine didn’t die in vain his testimony stressed the importance of knowing your worth and to stand up for what you believe in.  You are important and have the power to influence others.

Flowers, jewellery, chocolates, and teddy bears can’t compare to the greatest love of all which is to love yourself.  Every human being is a miracle at conception only one sperm out of many sperm cells fertilises one egg.

It’s okay to be your own valentine you don’t need someone to validate you.  Treat yourself to dinner, or a movie after all you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else.
