Rowland Sutherland’s score ‘Enlightenment (In the Spirit of A Love Supreme
by John Coltrane)’ was commissioned by Chaser Productions and funded by
PRS for Music Foundation in 2012.

A Love Supreme is regularly voted one of the best jazz records of all time.
A Love Supreme has been placed 47th on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 best albums.

It has influenced countless musicians and artists from Frank Zappa to Jimi Hendrix and to this day, 50 years since it was recorded, is still considered essential listening, inviting the listener, in John Coltrane’s words, to experience ‘Elation, Elegance, Exaltation’.

Quotes following the premiere performance of ‘Enlightenment’ at The Chapel, Kings College London, 21 June 2012 – on the Summer Solstice:
“Conceived and presented by Paul Bradshaw’s Chaser Productions with arrangements by Rowland Sutherland and directed by Orphy Robinson, Sacred Music Sacred Spaces found perfect accord in the beautifully ornate Chapel at King’s College London…”

“Flautist Rowland Sutherland’s inspired vision…” “… instrumentation, textural colours and traditions from across the wide cultural spectrum that
reflects the UK’s inner cities today.”

“… the audience rapidly found themselves in the presence of a very special, deeply spiritual performance.”

“Sutherland’s newly composed parts merged seamlessly with Coltrane’s four part work…” “Coltrane created A Love Supreme as his gift to God, and at these two utterly spellbinding, sold out performances the gift well and truly kept on giving.” Jon Newey – Jazzwise

“Curated by Paul Bradshaw, former publisher and editor of Straight No Chaser magazine, and scored by flautist Rowland Sutherland, the performance was to include a multi-cultural ensemble of some of London’s finest jazz players directed by marimba and vibraphone virtuoso Orphy Robinson.”

“…But perhaps the biggest inspiration was the live recording of A Love Supreme at the Antibes Jazz Festival in 1965. This was certainly one path that Rowland Sutherland was exploring when he first imagined how the group should approach this daunting task.”

“… newly composed parts from Sutherland combine with the original themes to stunning effect.”

Andy Thomas – http://thequietus.com/articles/09173-john-coltrane-a-love-supreme-review. “Sacred Music: Sacred Spaces – A Love Supreme’ was an awesome and transcendental experience that stayed true to the term ‘spiritual jazz’.”

“…a musical force in its own right – showcasing the powerful musicianship of everyone on show.”

“to describe the evening as ‘deep’ merely scratches the surface.”
“It was by every means a stark reminder of John Coltrane’s interminable musical legacy and a celebration of London’s richly diverse jazz scene.” ! !
