The pets will find new homes in the Bay Area.

Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation has organization the evacuation of about 250 pets in Florida ahead of Hurricane Irma, and is preparing to welcoming them into its shelter for adoption.

Wings of Rescue will be flying 400 pets out of Florida in the next two days including 250 of dogs, cats and rabbits. The animals will be taken to La Russa’s ARF in Walnut Creek, the East Bay SPCA in Oakland and Dublin, and Berkeley Humane in Berkeley, where they’ll be available for adoption.

ARF initiated the evacuation, working with Humane Society of Broward County to empty their shelter. The cost of the flight is being shared with GreaterGood.org, a charitable organization that works to improve the health and well-being of people, pets and the planet.

Wings of Rescue is a Livermore-based group of volunteer pilots that also has volunteers in Southern California. The group has flown more than 26,000 dogs and cats from high intake and high-kill shelters to no-kill shelters in other states, and ultimately to new homes.
